WARNING: TypeThai is case senstive! 'A' and 'a' are treated differently!
Basic Vowels
I'm breaking this description into two types of vowels, the "basic" vowels, which are usually written with just one or two Thai/Roman characters and represent a "pure vowel" (monophthong), and "complex" vowels (diphthong).
Short vowels
Thai language distinguishes between short and long vowels and so does TypeThai, it's pretty simple, short vowels are written with a single roman character.
"–" is used to represent the place of the consonant.
Roman | Thai | Roman | Thai | |
---|---|---|---|---|
a | –ะ or –ั | i | –ิ | |
u | –ุ | U or ue | –ึ or –ื | |
o | โ–ะ | O | เ–าะ | |
e | เ–ะ or เ–็ | E | แ–ะ |
Long Vowels
Long vowels are essentially the same as the short vowels, except you double the letter, or add a colon (:).
aa and a: both become า, for example.
Roman | Thai | Roman | Thai | |
---|---|---|---|---|
aa or a: | –า | ii or i: | –ี | |
uu or u: | –ู | U or oe | เ–อะ | |
oo or o: | โ– | OO or O: | –อ | |
ee or e: | เ– | EE or E: or ae | แ– | |
eu | –ือ |
